South Devon cattle sell to 6,500gns at Exeter
South Devon bulls sold to a high of 6,500gns at the Society’s spring show and sale at Exeter yesterday (26 March).
Top price went to Mr and Mrs Richard Burrough’s polled bull, Z Godworthy Starbuster 17, from Axminster in Devon, who sold for 6,500gns to GK and MA Garrett and Son, Okehampton Devon.
Starbuster is sired by Brafferton Starbuster 17, a bull bred by Paul Harrison, and is out of a homebred Godworthy polled cow.
The Burroughs’ also made 4,000gns when selling Godworthy Starbuster 15, to PA and DE Cleave, Holne, Devon.
The reserve male champion ticket was awarded to Goffe Cave Sturdy Away from Mr Richard Ford’s Leicestershire-based herd. He later sold for 5,000gns to Roger Rundle’s Kestle herd, Newquay, Cornwall.
Three more bulls sold for 4,000gns. First of these was A and C Farms’ Z Langham’s Kubla 1, which was purchased by Mells Park Trust, Frome, Somerset.
Next was WP and SL Harper’s X Bedford Noble which sold to EL Foale, Newton Abbot, Devon.
The last bull at this money was Z Trewint Hallmark 2 from PS and AP Rowe’s. Buyer was RJ Throssell, Holsworthy, Devon.
The day’s champion was awarded to the polled bull Z Colcharton Jasper 2, from RJ and CJ Edwards, Tavistock, Devon. Jasper 2 is by another high EBV bull, AI Ridgemere Jasper, and out of a homebred polled cow. He went home with Andrew Watkins from Kentchurch in Herefordshire for 3,700 gns.
In the female section the champion came from The Tully Partnership’s Waddeton herd, Brixham, Devon. Waddeton Ann 137 is a stylish strong bulling heifer by Goffe Cave Persius 9. She later took the top price in the sale ring at 1,950 gns, when selling to David Smallridge from Ermington, Ivybridge. Mr Smallridge also bought the second highest priced heifer from the Grove herd, Grove Buttercup 140, another bulling heifer with bloodlines going back to the well-proven Trevowah Joe Louis 11.
