Strong sheep trade reported at Tenbury sale

The second seasonal sale at Tenbury Wells attracted 3,174 store sheep including a prize show of 1,501 breeding ewes, also 1,524 store lambs, 133 cull ewes and 16 stock rams.

The breeding ewe trade was stronger than anticipated as was the trade on the store lambs and breeding rams, reported auctioneer Nick Champion.

In the breeding ewe section the championship pen went to Liz Gutteridge of Eastham whose Welsh Mule yearlings sold at the day’s top price of £166 to co judge Guy Williamson, Bridgnorth. The reserve championship went to a pen of North Country Mule yearlings from Les and Tim Yarnold, Burford which sold at £158 to Jim Goddard, Eardiston.

First prize Suffolk x yearlings went to Tom Wood, Birchley which made £165 to Robert Handley, Sutton. Continental x yearlings sold to £161 from Tom and Anne Durston-Smith, Sutton going to Colin Norwood, Boraston.

STORE LAMBS
The 1,524 store lambs met a fast trade with wether lambs selling to a top of £80.50 for Beltex x from Shirley Sutton, Cleobury Mortimer. Ewe lambs sold at a top of £88 for Texels from Tom and Anne Durston-Smith, Sutton. Overall the store lambs sold from £20 to £88 to average £59.63

133 cull and grazing ewes in line with the national trend met an easier trade selling to a top of £71.50 to average £49.02.

16 rams were keenly sought after with a top of £462 for a Charollais shearling from Peter Vaughan, Kingsland, with his Texel shearlings selling to £441.50 and Charollais
