Thainstone Royal Northern spring show and sale tops at 6,900gns

Beef bulls topped at 6,900gns at the Royal Northern spring show and sale at Thainstone last week (February 26).

Sale topper was Jock Wilson, Kinclune, Glenkindie, with the April 2012 born Charolais bull Kincludes Hayday, sired by Thrunton Crownprince and out of Kinclundes Danell. Buyer was WLR Keir, Breamorlich.

Mr Wilson also won the Charolais and overall championships with Homebred Kinclune’s Hogan, an April born bull out of Dam Kinclune Cilla and sired by Maerdy Boom. He didn’t sell.

Limousin trade topped at 5,000gns was Corsairtly Harley from Messrs R and K Davidson, Keith, Banffshire. This March 2012-born bull is sired by the Mas Du Clo son, Millington Dominator, and is out of the dam Redstroke Buttercup. He headed home with AR Mathers and Sons, Wardes, Kintore.

Messrs Mathers gave 4,700gns for Lettoch Hotspot from Colin Stuart, Chapeltown, Ballindalloch. At 20-months-of-age he is by Elrick Admiral and out of Whitelums Belinda.

The Limousin championship and overall reserve was awarded to Emslies Hurricane from Harry Emslie, Peterhead. Born in July-2012 he is by Procters Cavalier and is out of the homebred dam, Emslies Verity. Purchasers were C and G Thomson, Upper Tillenhilt, Midmar, Inverurie.

Emslies Hurricane 4500gns

Simmental trade was led by WS Stronach with his May 2012 born bull Islavale Darrel.

He made 5,000gns when selling to GW Cowie, Drums of Muirake, Cornhill. The Simmental champion was awarded to Corskie Discorery, from Iain Green, Fochabers. Sired by Greencap Ace he is out of Corskie Puma.


The Aberdeen Angus champion was awarded to Ballindalloch Panda, a 22-month homebred bull from Ballindalloch Home Farm. Sired by Lorabar Jasper Eric and out of Ballindalloch Primula he sold for 6,500gns to GA Yeats and Company, North Deskie, Lumsden.

The Salers were topped by John C McIntyre & sons at 3,800gns with the 22-month-old bull Corrichie Dougal.


The champion of any other breeds was the Shorthorn bull, Birselawsie Freddie from D and J Hardie. He did not sell.

Exhibition cattle

John and Craig Robertson, Newton of Logierait, found success after taking the champion heifer, champion bullock and overall champion.


They also took the top price for another, first prize Limousin cross Belgium Blue bullock, which sold at £3,800 to Blair Duffton of Bogie Street, Huntly.

The reserve overall champion Wonderboy was a homebred, 2013-April born bullock from Monzie Farms, Gilerton. Sired by Kype Elliot, who was bought at Carlisle for £3,500. The bullock sold for £3,400 to S and SM Brown, Roepark, Little Brechin.

The heifer championship was won by a 10-month old, Newton of Logierait heifer from John and Craig Robertson, and sold to A J Laird, Mossbank, Burray for £2,800. The Limousin cross was bought in Carlisle with her mother for £2,700 from Jimmy Mulholland.


Averages: 53 bulls, £3,553; 33 calves, £1847.88; heifers, £1794; bullocks, £1,920.
