Trade peaks at £2,200 at Exmoor market

Prices reached £2,200 for a British Blue stock bull at Exmoor Farmers livestock market last week, with a smaller entry of cattle meeting flying trade.


A selection of cows with calves at foot topped the market at £1,440 for Mr RG Tucker, 1 Elbury Cottages, who also sold a second for £1,280. Both of these cows were Charolais with a bull and heifer calf at foot respectively.


The next best price went to a British Blue outfit from Messrs FJ Hayes and Sons, Great Nurcott, whose first calving heifer with steer calf at foot made £1,360.


A British Blue stock bull from the same home sold for day’s top price of £2,200 with a second Charolais stock bull selling for £1,300 for Mr RG Tucker.


A selection of breeding heifers sold to a strong trade. This included Aberdeen Angus Heifers from Mr REJ Crocombe, Dean Farm, which sold to £990 with others to £960 and £950.


A Beef Shorthorn from Mr RG Tucker sold to £870, while a Charolais Heifer from Messrs J Pugsley and Son, Zeal Farm, selling to £790, others from the same home being Simmental breeding sold to £820 and £790.


A small number of cull cows sold to an average of 145 p/kg and topped at 166.7 p/kg. This equated to an average of £880 a head, with the best making £1,235 for a strong Limousin cow from Mr SP Kellaway, Brinsworthy Farm.


Other notable prices included two cows from Messrs RP Elston and Son, Old Berry Farm, who sold a Limousin Cow for £1,060 and a Hereford Cow for £1050.


Store cattle met with a very quick trade as heifers sold to an average of 202.3p/kg and a peak of 228.3p/kg. This equated to a £625 a head average and a top price of £895 – achieved for a Simmental heifer from Mr RI Crocombe, Rovadean.


Store Steers sold strongly to an average of 226 p/kg and a top of 266 p/kg with the average a head standing at £715 and a peak of £1,098 for a steer from Mr P Hurman, Wahsers Farm.
