This week’s Lady Day Collective Dairy Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre saw well-bred calved heifers peak at 2,750gns.
And according to auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt, there was an “exceptional demand for well-bred cattle”.
Taking the top price on the day was March-calved Lulu heifer from RJ Court. This one is from Davelea and by Deslacs Shaquille with nine generations of EX or VG dams; the buyer was an undisclosed telephone bidder. Messrs Court also sold Roxy, by Comestar Lyman ET, for 2,500gns.
Meanwhile, regular consigners Roland and Simon Bugler sold a 2 year old Oman daughter, Bettiscombe Tilly 159th, for 2,420gns. They also topped the calved cow section selling 2nd calver Bettiscombe Principal Tabatha for 2,000gns. Their consignment of 9 cows and heifers averaged £2,209.
Other calved heifers leading thesale were Ian Dimond’s Dorset Samuelo Fairmaid 3rd at 2,400gns, Mr B Rose and Son’s Manor Zenith Fleece at 2,250gns and W Green and Son’s Birchwood Bolton Precious 3 for 2,180gns.
Cows for 2,000gns came from BL Davies and Son with Davlea Master Nora GP82 and DJ Norman’s Ciderhouse Tom Janke.
While in-calf heifers due in April, from RJ Jeanes and Son, sold to 1,580gns, and commercial heifers due in May by Wa-Del Hayden, from LS Pow and Sons Ltd, sold to 1,550gns. And bulling heifers from Peachy Holsteins sold to 1,300gns for a Huddlesford-bred Betsy.
Commercial heifers from MRE and BA Hawker sold to 1,000gns, and August 2011-born heifer calves from N, R and D Norris sold to 820gns for Sandyhills Marquise 252nd by Ronelee SS Durable.
Holstein Bulls sold to 2,250gns for BL Davies and Sons Davlea Platinum ET by Goldwyn. And F G Butler and Son’s cross-bred yearlings sold to 650gns.
A day which generated 47 different purchasers from Devon to Carmarthen, Hereford and Oxfordshire produced the following averages:
