Lanoshield wards off chassis rust with lanolin-based spray

Waxoyl is often the go-to product for protecting metalwork from the ravages of rot, but lanolin extracted from sheep’s wool is a more natural alternative.

Lanoshield is one of a handful of firms offering such a product, which it refines to remove the smell before mixing it with solvents and inhibitors.

These make it easier to apply and more effective at hampering rust.

Application can be carried out using an aerosol can, spray bottle or, for larger projects, a compressor; the only prerequisite being that the area is thoroughly cleaned first to remove any traces of dirt.

Once left to dry, it will withstand regular pressure washing, although steam cleaners and strong detergents can strip it away.

If applied to a vehicle chassis correctly, the firm says it should last for a couple of years before needing to be topped up.

Prices start at £17 for a 500ml spray bottle, 400ml aerosols are £17.99 and a 5-litre can – enough to thoroughly treat the underside of a pickup or 4×4 – is £105.

Tubs of thicker, anti-seize grease are also available from £15 for 250ml.
