The 163hp to 225hp Axion range bolsters the company’s offering for contractors and the arable sector, slotting in between Atles heavy cultivations tractors and Ares 800-series models which cover the lower end of this power band.
Built at the Claas-owned Renault tractor plant at Le Mans, these new tractors continue the tradition of combining a John Deere engine with the same transmission used in equivalent Massey Ferguson tractors.
The latest Deere power-plants use four valves per cylinder, a variable output turbo, common-rail fuel injection and exhaust gas recirculation to meet Tier III emissions standards. Top two Axion models also gain a power-boost function that adds an additional 30hp for transport, and pto work or tasks that take a lot of hydraulic power.
The transmission used is a 24F x 24R, six-speed powershift with four powered range changes. Developed by MF/Claas partnership Gima, the Hexashift unit is the same basic gearbox as MF’s Dyna-6 but uses completely different control software.
The Axion is significantly more technologically advanced than its Ares stable-mates. Up in the cab the operator gains an updated version of the Cebis computer used on Lexion combines and high-horsepower Xerion tractors.
This setup is used to monitor and control all the major tractor functions including:
- transmission aggressiveness and automatic shift points
- spool-valve flow and timing
- preset engine speeds
- sequence programming for automated headland turnaround procedures
Although most functions can be adjusted through Cebis, main linkage, transmission and hydraulic controls are grouped on the right-hand armrest.
The cab interior has changed to accommodate this upgraded technology but retains the same four-spring suspension and frame which makes it the largest on the market for this size tractor, according to Claas.
For now the Axion will supplement the existing ex-Renault Claas line-up, with Ares 800s providing customers with a lower spec option.
In time a less sophisticated Axion model will be developed to cater for this market, as well as a version equipped with a stepless CVT gearbox.
