Dansco ups mozzarella output

SHREDDED MOZZARELLA cheese made in south west Wales will soon be topping many more pizzas.

Carwyn Jones, the Welsh Assembly‘s rural affairs minister, has officially opened new production capacity at the Dansco creamery in Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire.

In future the site, located in the heart of one of the principle dairying areas of Wales, will be able to make and shred 16,000t of the cheese a year.

“The dairy industry is going through difficult times, not least with challenges posed by CAP reform and milk prices,” Mr Jones admitted.

“Projects such as this strengthen my conviction that we are on the right lines to secure a positive future for Welsh farming.”

He added that the Dansco expansion enhanced the image of Wales as a producer of quality food, which competed in the marketplace on quality rather than price.

Developments at the creamery have attracted £1.7m of EU and Welsh Assembly funding in the form of marketing and development grants.

David Neill, Danco‘s managing director, said the new investment would allow the company to continue developing sales of branded and value added cheese.

It would also allow it to widen the product range it sold on domestic and export markets.
