Livestock farmers may have been spared the appallingly soggy soils of 2013 and 2014, but improving the quality of grassland is still an important task for many people.

At this year’s Royal Welsh Show, Opico showed off its 3m Sward Rejuvenator – a grassland improvement tool with an aggressive Shattaboard with slicing plates, two rows of heavy-duty harrow tines, an Air 8 grass seeder and a Prisma roller.

The idea is that the slicing plates and harrow tines break up and level the soil surface in front of the grass seed outlets, with the Prisma roller firming the soil behind.

Aggressive slicing plates and a harrow action are said to make the Rejuvenator ideal for use in badly poached fields that require restoration.

It can also be used – minus the seeder – for harrowing grassland to remove trash and stimulate grass growth, and for molehill levelling.

The action of the heavy 600mm diameter Prisma Roller cracks and breaks clods produced by the front equipment to create a fine tilth for grass seed to germinate in, the company said.

As a result, the machine is suitable for both grassland rejuvenation and reseeding of cultivated land.

The Sward Rejuvenator comes in a 3m working width and is available as a mounted machine, retailing from £11,620, or as a trailed model from £12,987. The seeder is not included.
