Cereals 2010: Deere to fit twin-disc chaff spreader to wide combine headers

This harvest, John Deere will have two 10.5m (35ft) wide combine headers on evaluation in the UK.

Although a great way of boosting harvester output, it also presents a problem – how to spread chopped straw and chaff across such a wide bout?

To deal with this, the company has developed a new twin-disc spreader. In work, the normal chaff spreader is reversed to throw material up into the straw-chopper stream. The material then drops on to the hydraulically-driven discs and is flung out across the full working width.

Operators can independently speed up or slow down the discs to counter side-winds or slopes, while a “wagging tail” deflector ensures an even spread.
