John Deere launches lower spec 6030 tractors

If you’re after a straightforward, uncomplicated load-lugger without the bells, whistles and computer gadgetry of the John Deere’s ‘Premium’ spec 6030-series tractors, then the firm’s latest offering may tempt you in.

The new ‘Standard’ 6030 is set to replace current 6020 ‘SE’ tractors and offers a slightly higher level of sophistication than before.

In styling terms there’s little to tell the new models apart from their more expensive stablemates. Eagle-eyed tractor-spotters will notice that the silver and chromed light surrounds are gone and the cab pillars revert from green to a more familiar black.

The biggest differences lurk under the bonnet. Both four and six cylinder models use the same common-rail engines as higher spec siblings but utilise two (rather than four) valves per cylinder and lack a variable geometry turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation system and power boost function.

This means the tractors meet strict new emissions legislation but get there in a less fuel efficient way. Power output is approximately 5hp less than equivalent ‘Premium’ models and Deere warns to expect them to be heavier on the gas.

A bonnet mounted exhaust is standard fare although it’s likely most UK dealers will order a pillar-hugger.

On the gearbox front all models are equipped with a clutchless direction shuttle. In its most basic form an all mechanical 4-range, 4-speed box can be fitted or buyers can opt for 20 and 24-speed ‘PowrQuad Plus’ units with a 4-step powershift.

Although the cabin appears much the same as other -30-series models, the interior has a strong sense of familiarity about it.

The controls date back to John Deere’s late ‘90s -10-series tractors – tilting, telescopic steering column and analogue dash, plus the complete right-hand console with the addition of a row of coloured LEDs to show which powershift speed is engaged.

The air-conditioning and blower controls move out from the roof-lining to make room for a roof hatch. This can be supplied in glass – an important feature as Deere expects to sell over 40% of these 6030 ‘Standard’ models with a loader.

Cup-holders, extra storage, a cool-box and passenger seat all join air-con on the options list, as do GPS guidance – at £2480 – and full auto-steering for £8500.
