Keeping combines afloat – pictures and forum discussion

Horrendous weather across the UK this harvest has prompted plenty of discussion on the best ways of keeping harvesters from sinking.
The most obvious solution is to park trailers on the headland and double up on front end rubber by fitting dual wheels to combines.
A regular on our FWiSpace picture galleries, John Anderson sent in these shots of Michael Kelly harvesting winter wheat with his New Holland CX780 with 15ft header for Peter Anderson near Athy Co.Kildare between the showers on the 29th of August 2008.
…and this Claas Lexion 520 with dual wheels cutting winter wheat for Mark Moore near Ballinabrackey, Co.Meath on Sat 30th of August.
But that’s not all that can be done. Wider rubber on the rear will also make a big difference. But beware of the extra strain that can put on steering rams, king-pins, etc… There’s plenty of advice and discussion about that on the FWiSpace forums – take a look and post your comments.
