Lord Plumb creates foundation for young farmers
Farming industry stalwart Lord Henry Plumb has announced the creation of a foundation which will provide grants, a mentoring network, scholarships and bursaries to young people.
Lord Plumb, who was NFU president in the 1970s and European parliament president in the 1980s, wants the foundation to give a “leg up” to farming’s leaders of the future.
The Henry Plumb Foundation will be officially launched on 25 October at the House of Lords.
It is looking to raise £2m from donors, which will generate an annual income that can provide practical support to young farmers.
“I feel passionate that we as an industry seek to encourage young people to become good farmers,” said Lord Plumb.
“I would like them to be expert in managing their affairs and I want our leaders of tomorrow to be fully conversant in policy matters at national, European and global levels.
“Agriculture, as much as any other industry, lives in a global economy; we must not be frightened of this but educated enough to make the most of the opportunities that arise. My foundation will, I hope, be a catalyst for young people to take advantage of these opportunities and bring success to themselves and vibrancy to our industry”.
Two objectives will drive the running of the foundation. The first priority will be about promoting leadership, technical and political awareness and entrepreneurial skills.
The foundation will also be looking to foster links and exchanges between young people involved in farming.
Young people will be able to apply for bursaries or grants to be used as business start-ups. Alternatively, they will be able to apply for funding for internships, overseas exchanges or attendance at technical, management or leadership courses.
It should also be possible to apply for a business mentor for a period of up to two years.
