Massey Ferguson unveils new 135hp 5400 series tractor models

Looking for a 135hp tractor that’s not laden down with sophisticated electronics? Then Massey Ferguson reckons it has a couple of new models that should be on your shortlist.

They are the MF5475 and MF5480, the latest additions to the company’s small-mid horsepower 5400 range. They’re aimed squarely at medium-sized arable growers and mixed and livestock farms.

Though both tractors have 135hp under the bonnet, the way they muster the power differs

.

* The 5475 has a Perkins 6-cylinder 6.6litre engine

* The 5480 has a 4-cylinder 4.9 litre Sisu engine.

Both are common-rail, Tier 3-compliant units.

These are designed to be simpler tractors than those in the firm’s 6400 and 7400 ranges, says the company. So there are no headland management systems, no icon-heavy performance monitors and no electronic spool valves.

What you do get is MF’s well-sorted Dyna-4 transmission with 16+16 gears arranged into four ranges with four powershift gears in each. Ranges are selected clutchlessly using a button.

There’s also a 20hp power boost for transport work.

So who are the tractors aimed at? MF reckons it could be small or medium-sized arable growers who want a simple tractor or mixed farmers who don’t need sophisticated electronics.

The longer wheelbase of the 6-cylinder 5475 is probably better suited to the arable user, while the shorter 5480 is more suited to loader work on stock or mixed farms.

The next three tractors in the 5400 range – the 115hp £45,067 5460, 120hp £48,172 5465 and 125hp £48,751 5470 – also get the new engines with power boost. This comes in automatically in third and fourth gears to give extra lugging power on the road.

Other changes include rear-hinged one-piece bonnets (no more side panels to remove first), lower link sensing on the hydraulics and the option of 110 litres/min closed-centre hydraulics on the 135hp models.

The two biggest can also now be fitted with an integrated 2.8t capacity front linkage + pto. Those with the 5470, 5475 and 5480 can also fit MF’s Quadlink front suspension.

Price-wise, the 5475 and 5480 check in at £51,342 and £50,601 respectively.

Interestingly, MF now has 6cyl tractors in the 135/155hp band in three of its ranges.

* The 135/155hp MF5475 costing £51,342

* The 135/145/160hp MF6475 costing £53,986

* The 140/150hp MF7475 costs £68,932

Of course the 6475 and 7475 are bigger tractors, with more sophisticated transmissions, higher lift capacities and more electronics. But it shows what a choice there is in this increasingly popular horsepower band.
