MF launches new heavyweight
TOPPING OUT Massey Ferguson‘s new-look tractor range is now the 215-290hp 8400-series.
Due to be officially unveiled next month, these new tractors will replace the existing MF 8200 range.
Apart from a number of styling changes to bring the new models into line with their smaller stable-mates, the tractors also receive a number of upgrades in the engine, transmission and control departments.
Engines are sourced from Sisu – a division of Agco-owned Finnish sister-company Valtra – and are electronically controlled to provide various power control functions to link with the tractor‘s transmission.
But perhaps the most radical change is to be found in the transmission.
The outgoing 8200 range offered a choice of semi- and full-powershift gearboxes, while all 8400 tractors are equipped with MF‘s DynaVT transmission – the same stepless gearbox developed and used by German sister-company, Fendt.
Linked closely to the engine‘s electronic engine management system, it offers a variety of operating modes to allow independent, automatic control of forward speed and engine output, regardless of engine load.
A new Datatronic control terminal is also introduced – it combines automatic headland control, performance monitors and electronic spool-valve management, among other features.
The cab receives some updates – noise levels are down to 71dB(A), partly thanks to the introduction of the Dual Stage cab suspension setup. Truck-type “air-bags” and dampers are used to cushion shock-loads from the rear-axle.
Prices for the new tractors are yet to be finalised but it is expected that the new models will available towards the end of this year.
