16.3m tonne UK wheat harvest?

FRANCES cereals office, ONIC, has today reported a wheat harvest total of over 6 million tonnes from the countrys central grain belt, which translates to a record yield of 8 t/ha.

The Home-Grown Cereals Authority estimates that the same yield/hectare in the UK would produce around 16.3m tonnes, although the HGCA emphasises that it is currently too early to peg the home-grown yield.

Yesterday, the LIFFE wheat futures market had its best day for months, closing up &1.50-2.00. Today, the market rose further, up another 50p-75p at noon. French delivered wheat markets are up, too, by 50p-£1.
