1900gns is B&W peak

AN in-calf heifer, the result of an embryo imported from the USA, topped the dispersal of the Glanrhosfarm Holstein Friesian herd at 1900gns.

Glanrhosfarm Mandel Joy is by Lutz Meadows E Mandel, a bull whose semen has been unavailable in the UK, and out of the 13,000kg cow Wilsondale Bell Winken. Joy is due next month to Etazon Lord Lily and joins the D N James Meadowfort herd at Trawscoed.

The sale, which followed David Griffiths decision to retire from dairy farming, produced 11 four-figure bids from the crowd that gathered at Blaenplwyf, near Aberystwyth

The herd had been based on the original Glanrhos Friesians which were established in 1947 (dispersed in 1993) and were well known for their power and substance. The Glanrhosfarm cattle continue to demonstrate these conformation qualities which were clearly responsible for confident bidding from buyers tapping into some of the foundation families.

But more recent lines also attracted attention and it was a mother and daughter from the Midge family, tracing back to the 1980s cow Newlands Sheik Maggie, that both brought the days second highest price of 1400gns.

Glanrhosfarm Nick Midge, a second calver by United Nick and in-calf to Etazon Addison, was bought by Pembrokeshire farmers &#42 M and D P Vaughan for their Cabal herd. Her daughter, an in-calf heifer by Maizefield Bellwood, was taken for the Dynam herd of W G and E A Trow.

Messrs Trow were busy again among the 64 individual buyers at the sale and gave 1200gns for Glanrhosfarm Ohio Lani, a Good Plus-81 first calf daughter of Juniper Secret Ohio bred out of a Tradition Cleitus dam. (Norton and Brooksbank).
