5000gns peak as Howardian herd disperses

PEDIGREE black-and-white breeders continue to pay well for the choicest lots on offer this season.

And at last weeks dispersal of Charles Wilsons York-based Howardian herd, bidding peaked at 5000gns.

All eyes were on Hemble Astre Honey 3rd, the predicted star of the sale, who drew a flurry of bids. Bought as a guaranteed heifer pregnancy out of Miss Sybil Edwards imported cow Roybrook W Honey, she was served in January to Prelude and looked a great prospect.

She was taken by M J and M Waldron to join their Raldown herd at Rotherham, South Yorks.

Her September born Prelude heifer calf made 2700gns to &#42 and M Waites and Son for their Shore herd on Humberside.

Top price for a home-bred cow was 1680gns given by A Bradley, Pickering for the Joylan USA sired Howardian USA Ladybird, sold in-calf to Lieutenant. Served heifers sold to 1050gns when J E Hugill, Kirby in Cleveland took a daughter of Karnvilla Ration.

AVERAGES: 51 cows and calved heifers £967 and 17 served heifers £723. (Norton and Brooksbank)
