700 beet growers call it a day
By Robert Harris
MORE than 700 sugar-beet growers have chosen to quit the sector through British Sugars outgoers scheme.
Latest figures show many smaller growers have decided to sell their tonnage, says BSs Paul Bee.
“We have now approved 415,000t of transfers between growers, over 1350 transactions. About 10% of the national grower base has relinquished all tonnage.”
With the closing date of 15 October approaching, many growers realise time is running out, he says.
Beet transfer prices have eased slightly, typically to 28-30/t, only just above the new contract tonnage price.
