AA record smashed at Carlisle

DEMAND for Aberdeen Angus was strong at the societys show and sale at Carlisle, where the average price rose by £370 to a new breed record for the venue.

A top price of 3900gns for a bull from the Dark Lane herd and a lively trade for females bolstered confidence among breeders whose stock values continue to get a lift from the expanding marketing schemes for the breed.

A wealth of Canadian breeding came good for mid-Wales breeders N J and B Pittams whose Edmund of Dark Lane from their herd at Brecon drew the top bid of 3900gns.

The June 1996-bred bull is by Royal Stockman (Imp) and out of a cow by Ellanin Camelot (Imp) and stood third in his class under judge Mr Trevor Stebbings, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Buyer was I Nelson, Annan, Dumfries.

"The Dark Lane bull was an impressive meaty bull with great depth of flesh and strength in his hindquarters," said auctioneer David Dickinson. "Bull trade was very good and it was buyers looking for strong commercial crossing sires that dominated the bidding."

Stephen Butcher, who farms with sons James and Simon, was in the market for a bull to run with suckler cows on his farm near Skipton, North Yorks. He selected John Moores Passionist of the Moss, a son of Perryville Roscoe, the bull that has proved such a great influence at The Moss. Passionist had a Beef Value of 27 and made 3600gns.

Two bulls from Tom Arnotts noted Haymount herd in Roxburghshire were among the most sought after. Goushover of Haymount, a son of Windover of Haymount and out of a cow by Purge of Eastfield, reached 3200gns to C Bruce and Partners, Melrose, Roxburghsire.

Herdmate Pidratio of Haymount, by Lord Horatio of Blelack, made 2900gns to R McKie, Castle Douglas.

Cumbria breeder Mrs Elaine Richardson from the heart of the Lake District saw her Black Lordsam of Wasdale realise 2600gns to A Howat and Sons, New Cumnock, Ayrshire after taking the reserve championship. He is by top sire TLA Northern Samurai.

The supreme championship went to Mr Arnotts powerful heifer Gelitia of Haymount, offered with her baby calf by Cardona Eagle. This impressive outfit was well fancied by several potential buyers but it was Isle of Man breeder R &#42 Quayles bid of 3400gns that proved the winner.
