Aberdeen Angus society loses out

THE ABERDEEN-Angus producer group is to lose its management of the Certified Aberdeen Angus Beef Scheme from December next year.

The decision by the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society, which owns the certified trade mark of the breed, comes at the end of a public spat in the Scottish farming media.

It means that the producer group will lose management of the certified brand and the benefits this confers, from the end of next year.

According to one producer group insider, the trade mark was a tremendous boost and returned premiums back to commercial producers, which supported pedigree sales.

Over the past year, according to the source the society has tried to reclaim the certified brand.

But the society says the producer groups desire for sole procurement rights of the certified trade mark contravened UK law.
