ALMOST 10,000 farmers are now members of the Assured Combinable Crops Scheme, says director Robin Pirie.

That, together with Scottish Quality Cereals, represents 75-80% of UK traded grain, about 13.5 million tonnes.

“Malting, milling and compounding companies all want assured grain. And the new British farm standard will mean a big pull from the top by retailers,” Mr Pirie told Farmers Weekly at Cereals 2000.

Tesco is the latest supermarket to use ACCS products, starting in September. It joins Safeway, Sainsbury and Marks & Spencer.

Rival assurance outfit Genesis has received strong backing from NABIM, which represents UK flour millers and says the latest Genesis proposals look promising.

“With modest protocol adjustments and a proven auditing and verification system it could present a viable alternative from harvest 2001,” said a spokesman.

  • Members of the ACCS who are renewing their subscription for the third consecutive year will qualify for a loyalty refund, worth 12.50. It is the latest in a series of subscription money-back savings amounting to total discounts of 10-55%, says chairman Jonathan Tipples.
