Africans try to save coffee deal

AFRICAN coffee producers are making a last ditch attempt to save an international coffee agreement, which is due to expire at the end of September.

Producing nations want to see the deal modified to support the coffee market more and to regulate it.

Brazil, the worlds largest coffee grower, has threatened to leave the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) over the issue.

The African compromise involves a two-year extension of the existing agreement, allowing more time for further discussions to take place.

This would include the setting up of a technical committee which would examine ideas for a new agreement.

Producers meet in Brazil in July to consider the African plan.
