Alpacas to star at Glyndebourne
MORE than 400 alpacas will soon be swapping the windswept Andes for pastures around the Glyndebourne opera house in Sussex, reports the Financial Times.
The alpacas – fine-fleeced cousins of the llama – are being leased by Atlantic Alpaca, a UK company which imports, breeds and sells the animals.
The British Alpaca Fibre Co-operative last year sorted, graded and spun about four tonnes of fleece and pays breeders 10/kg plus a share of the profits.
Alpacas can cost up to 8000 each.
