Alternator charge

USING three-stage regulation, Merlin Equipment says its 55A Powerline alternator will outperform a conventional 100A alternator. The key, says Merlin, is in the staged regulation to keep batteries 100% charged. Bulk charge provides full power until the battery is 80% charged; absorption phase delivers a steadily decreasing current to replenish remaining battery capacity.

When the battery is fully charged, the alternator switches to float mode and acts as a DC power supply, up to its maximum power rating. Powerline three-stage alternators are available with outputs from 55 to 250A, at 12V and 24V. Prices start at £199. (01491-824333)
