Lifes not all glamour for Gale Gate St George, the eight-year-old, 18.2hh black gelding with which 16-year-old Joseph Gardner won the decorated harness class.
The gelding works in the forest, will pull a barge and does a lot of road work as well smart jobs like weddings, furnerals and promotions, says Peter Gardner, Josephs father. St George is one of five horses that Peter keeps on his North Yorks smallholding and preparing his
harness for the show had been a family effort that took three days to complete. There are 1380 pieces of brass on the Yorks/Lancs border style harness and every item needs careful attention, said Peter, lifting and bending a clincher drop to show a row of tightly packed studs.
