Roy and Ian Davis (right) offered 178 beef cattle at Holwell Court Farm, Hatfield, Herts, last week. They saw Simmental cross cows with calves at foot make to £800, averaging £730. Hereford cross cows with calves, meanwhile, went to £630, levelling at £535. Year-old steers on green CIDs topped at £518, with heifers to £360. Auctioneer Graham Beeson said that in these difficult times, he was pleased with prices. Generally, the store trade is "extraordinarily" strong, in view of the finished beef prices. "Hope, it seems, springs eternal," said Mr Besson.
