Whole-crop harvesting gets under way at Burton Row Farm, Brent Knoll, Somerset. Milk producer Jim Rice grew 16ha (40 acres) of Hunter winter wheat for forage but has filled two Ag-bags with just 11ha (28 acres), and will harvest the rest as mature grain. He decided to try whole-crop this year because his heavy clay land means maize establishment and harvesting are difficult. This is the first whole-crop that contractors A and R House have cut this year. The crop has been clamped using an enzyme additive and will be fed to Mr Rices 70-cow herd as about 30% of the forage in the winter ration.
