Preparing for potato quality… Kevin Cobb sets up 60cm (24in) ridges ahead of de-stoning work on sandland at Eleveden Farms, Icklingham, Suffolk. The operation, also carried out for carrots, onions and parsnips, needs to be so deep to ensure 35-38cm (14-15in) of flint-free soil for good quality Russet Burbank, explains vegetable production manager Andrew Francis. Potatoes account for 400ha (1000 acres) of the 9300ha (23,000 acres) farmed by Elveden in the area.

The three-bed Reekie ridger was working behind a 340hp Claas Challenger 75E.
