A nitrate testing system which can be used in the field is currently being developed by Geonor. Taking, says the company, just 10 minutes from sample to producing a result, the tester first mixes the sample with water before a probe is used to produce the nitrate reading. Results are displayed and recorded in a control box – the information can be downloaded later in the office to create a soil nitrate level record for a field. Not a unit likely to be of interest to farmers, at about £8000, interest is more probable from contractors or consultants.
