EWES & LAMBS: Best couples traded at between £28 and £32 a life at Gloucester on Monday, with the second-quality sorts from £22 to £25 a life. Overall averages were £24 a life and £60 a couple, report Gloucester Market Auctioneers.

PRIME PIGS: At Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, on Monday auctioneers Lacy Scott and Knight saw averages of 67.8p, 68.6p and 67.2p/kg lw for porkers, cutters and baconers respectively.

FINISHED CATTLE: Trade was slightly firmer at Ludlow, Shrops, on Monday, with lean, well-fleshed steers showing the biggest rise, according to auctioneers McCartneys. Strong steers between 750kg and 850kg, together with the very small heifers, proved difficult to clear. Overall steer averages were 80.8p for lights, 88.4p for mediums and 88.8p/kg for heavies.
