Australian eco-warriors hit GM pineapples
By Boyd Champness
ENVIRONMENTAL protestors have sabotaged a Queensland trial plot of genetically modified pineapples in what is believed to be Australias first instance of “eco-terrorism”.
Vandals scaled a 2.5m fence at the Queensland Department of Primary Industrys Redland Research Station last week and proceeded to kick plants, rip out the central leaves and attempt to remove plants from the soil.
The GM research plot involves the manipulation of a natural “switch” within the pineapple plant that regulates time of flowering.
A group claiming to represent the “Free Seed Liberation” movement claimed responsibility for the attack.
