Aventis reports big income increase

By FWi staff

LIFE sciences giant Aventis has reported a 56.8% increase in net income for the first six months of 2000.

This dispels fears that company formed eight months ago from the merger of Frances Rhne-Poulenc and Germanys Hoescht would be hampered by cross-cultural baggage, reports the Financial Times.

Net incomes rose from a pro-forma figure of Euro215m ($193m) to Euro337m after exceptional charges of Euro417m.

However, the newspaper reports that Aventis may be considering spinning off its agrochemicals division.

It says management will be closely watching the spin off of Syngenta through the merger of agrochemicals activities of Novartis and AstraZeneca.

Aventis has supplied seeds for the ongoing controversial genetically modified crop trials in the UK.
