Banana deal may satisfy USA
CARIBBEAN banana exporters and Ecuador, the worlds biggest producer, have agreed a tariff rate quota arrangement which they hope will satisfy US concerns about the EUs import regime.
The proposal has been sent to the USA and the EU. Caribbean leaders hope for an agreement before the start of the World Trade Organisations ministerial meeting in four weeks.
Concerns have been expressed that the proposal is not compatible with WTO rules. It was the WTO which upheld US complaints against the EU import regime.
Caribbean producers and Ecuador have proposed a two-tier tariff quota arrangement rather than accepting a total deregulation of the market.
