Barley yields below average
THE start to harvest has been slow, according to Ted Bird, of Cannington Grain Co-op near Bridgwater, Somerset. They have received about 800t of feed barley and some oilseed rape.
Barley yields are estimated in the region of 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre), which is below the average 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre).
“The oilseed rape sample is not the cleanest sample, but the oil content is higher than last year.”
He believes that some farmers, from their 180 members, may start combining wheat by the end of the week.
