Be MV-free, says vet
MAEDI-VISNA (MV) should be considered as endemic within the national sheep flock and those re-stocking after F&M must find replacements from maedi-free flocks.
So urges Gareth Edwards of the Vet Lab Agency, Luddington, Warks in a letter to The Vet Record. Dr Edwards points out that MV is probably under detected, particularly in older ewes. "Sheep producers should monitor their flocks for this condition and any farm still to restock should seek replacements from Sheep and Goat Health Scheme-accredited maedi-free flocks," he explains.
"Restocking provides the opportunity of either introducing disease to new areas or the establishment of disease-free flocks, when appropriate biosecurity is observed." *
