Be on alert for ring rot
BRITISH potato growers are being warned to be extra vigilant for the notifiable disease ring rot after more cases have been found on the continent.
A 2001 season survey report to the EC Plant Health Standing Committee shows outbreaks in seven of the 15 member states.
The British Potato Council says it is especially worried about 23 recorded cases in seed potatoes, including one batch of Dutch seed sent to Portugal for official trials recently.
Another 143 cases were recorded in ware potatoes.
"Ring rot has been well established for some time in Germany and Denmark," says the BPCs Alasdair MacLennan. "But findings of the disease in countries such as Holland and Sweden are particularly concerning." *
