Beef plants fight shy of exports

THE St Merryn meat plant at Probus in Cornwall is expected to be the first meat processor to get British beef onto a Continental plate, but other companies are not so keen, reports The Herald.

The newspaper reports a French importer as saying Welsh and Scottish beef would be easier to sell, but not a single Scottish meat company has expressed an interest in doing so.

Getting back into the market is felt to be hedged with bureaucracy and added cost, although a consortium of eight companies is currently considering the options.

The newspaper was reporting in the aftermath of a high profile briefing of top continental buyers by the Meat and Livestock Commission this week.
