Beef reforms split producers

NEGOTIATIONS on reform of the Common Agricultural Policys beef regime has split producer countries into two camps – supporters of intensive and extensive production systems.

Stephen Fox, head of the Scottish Offices meat and livestock branch, told a conference in Perth that the supporters of intensive systems were Germany, Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands.

Extensive producers were represented by Ireland, the UK, France and Sweden.

He said the departments position was to support extensive systems and the suckler cow herd as far as possible.
