Beware of malting barley
GROWERS sowing spring barley as a one off where they have been unable to drill winter crops should aim for maximum yield even if they are sowing a malting variety such as Optic, says New Farm Crops Simon Phillips.
"Leave growing malting barley to the specialist growers," he says. "Often nitrogens are not bad if you get top yields anyway. But if you cut back the nitrogen and do not get a malting sample you are hit with a lower price and lower yield." *
