Big money bids push up Aberdeen Angus average

ABERDEEN Angus bulls kicked-off Perth week in fine style on Monday with a strong demand for stock sires and a continued up-beat trend among the commercial ranks, fired by premium prices generated through Angus beef marketing schemes.
The £2625 average for 60 bulls – seven more sold than last October – was £130 up on the year.
A top price of 11,000gns for Scottish Borders breeders J and W Arnott once again saw progeny of Cardona Eagle, a son of the influential sire Mushroom Friar Fergus, entice some of the liveliest bidding from the big crowd.
The Arnotts Pidono of Haymount, a January 1998 bull, is out of a Lord Horatio P11 of Blelack cow and had a 400-day weight of 646kg and a Beef Value of 29. His muscle score of 1.0 puts him in the top 1% of the breed. Buyers were J and D Stark, Inverness.
Wavono of Haymount, a similarly bred Eagle son out of a Lord Horatio dam, made 6000gns to JG Grant and Son, Newtonmoor.
Orkney breeder Colin Davidson had a good trade for his two bulls with Skaill Desmond achieving the days second highest bid of 7200gns. An ET-bred son of Nightingale Regent and out of a cow by MVF Classic 7Z, he had a Beef Value of 35 and makes the journey south to start work for I and * McLaren and Sons of Brackley, Northants. Mr Davidsons other bull by Regent made 3000gns.
Mushroom Friar Fergus came through again as the sire of local breeder Robert Galloways Cardona Esteem X10 that changed hands at 7000gns to Perth-based AI company Scotsire.
FJ Fraser and Son, Forfar, Angus, had a good day with three sons of the high BLUP-rated 8000gns bull Castle of Mey Elscot. Their Elscot X2 of Idvies, out of an Edward of Monkwood cow, made 4800gns to James Arnott, Forfar while Euro X11 of Idvies realised 4500gns to Perthshire-based Balmanno Farms. The trio was completed by Purist X14 of Idvies also taken at 4500gns by Kinnoidy Estates, Angus.

Another big money bull for J and W Arnott topped the bidding for Aberdeen Angus at Perth on Monday. Pidono of Haymount brought out the best from buyers who were in a confident mood, induced by the success of premium marketing schemes.
