Biotech giant wins environment award

AGREVO, the biotechnology giant criticised by green groups for its record over genetically modified crops, has won an award for protecting the environment.
The German-based company beat off competition from leading supermarkets for a new packaging system aimed at minimising the risk of pesticide spills.
Judges said the award recognised the contribution made to the elimination of chemical spillages by AgrEvos Echo System containers.
And they praised the management of waste packaging disposal by using returnable packaging and the management of potential residues in packs.
The Institute of Grocery Distribution Tetra Pak Packaging Design Environmental Management Award was presented at a top hotel in London.
AgrEvo is one of the companies targeted by environmental groups in the UK for their involvement with government-backed trials of GM crops.
Company bosses believe GM crops will lead to a reduction in pesticides applications on farms but environmentalists have disputed the claim.
Last year, AgrEvo was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £4413 for polluting a river while making environmental improvements.
