Blood spillage causes 25-mile tailback

DRIVERS were trapped in jams up to 25 miles long yesterday after thousands of gallons of blood from cows destroyed under the anti-BSE regulations spilled on to a motorway.

The 22-ton tanker was travelling from a slaughterhouse in south-west England when a seal failed, pumping blood on to the northbound M6 between Wednesbury and Wallsall in the West Midlands.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture said the chances that the blood was infected with BSE were remote. The blood was from a herd aged above 36 months and was being transported on behalf of the European Union Intervention Board.
