Bovine TB expert wins top dairy industry award

Bovine TB expert Sarah Tomlinson has been named Dairy Industry Woman of the Year 2026 by the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) for her contribution to farmers affected by the disease.

AHDB lead veterinary science expert Dr Tomlinson received the award at The Cream Awards on Thursday 3 September.

The annual award, now in its 10th year and organised by Women in Dairy, an RABDF initiative, recognises women making a significant contribution to the dairy sector.

Judges highlighted Dr Tomlinson’s work on bovine TB and her understanding of the impact outbreaks can have on farming families.

Claire Hodge, agriculture relationship manager at sponsor HSBC and a judge, said: “All of the judges had a tear in their eye at one point as Sarah shared her personal and professional experiences – which go beyond her leading work on bovine TB and demonstrate a deep empathy and understanding of the human impact of the disease on farming families.

“Above all, Sarah inspired the judges with her sense of purpose, drive, impact and humility in the face of such achievement.”

RABDF chief executive Hayley Campbell-Gibbons added: “Through her influential work on bTB, Sarah has provided hope, support and kindness to thousands of farmers facing some of the most difficult times of their lives,” she said.

“She shares her knowledge and views on a very political and emotive issue with care, passion and authority.”

The other finalists were Lorna Burdge of Waterhayne Farms, recognised for connecting farming with the public through educational visits and Open Farm Sunday, and Leanne Bertram of Graham’s Family Dairy, for her leadership and work supporting women entering agriculture.

Vicky Sloane-Masson of Ballacricket Farm was also shortlisted for her work on animal welfare, innovation and supporting young people and women in farming.
