Britain plans secure GM test zone

THE UK government is considering allowing a tightly controlled area of Britain as a testing zone for genetically modified (GM) crops, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The move would permit companies like Monsanto to test GM crops without the danger of cross-contamination of other crops – a criticism often levelled at the current GM crop tests taking place by environmental activists.

It would also prevent damage to the crops from protesters.

The designation of special test areas is to be discussed next month by officials from the governments organic farming advisory body, the United Kingdom Register of Organic Food Standards; the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions; and MAFF.
