Britain welcomes beef labelling

NEW EU labelling rules under which all beef sold by member states must be labelled with its country of origin have been welcomed by the government.

Agriculture ministers meeting in Luxembourg agreed proposals, which also include traceability labelling information, will be introduced in two stages by 2002, reports The Times.

Junior agriculture minister Joyce Quin said Britain was confident its beef monitoring was the safest in Europe and had no hesitation in advertising beef as British.
