British bulls climb rankings
WITH more British bred sires – Painley Knighthood, Moet Martha Franchise and Genus Townley – in Mays UK proven top ten, the British proof run breeding industry is gaining momentum.
Continuing his climb up the rankings, Painley Knighthood moves from thirteenth to fourth on PLI. Both his PLI and PIN have increased £7 since the February proofs. His PLI now stands at £122 with PIN at £103. He also promises good longevity, with a score of 0.5 for lifespan.
Dutch sire Etazon Celsius remains at the top of the rankings but still manages to increase both his PIN and PLI from £125 to £132. Stablemate Etazon Labelle also stays in the top ten.
Genus Townley, from the Emerald Acres Tammy family, is a newcomer. He scores £123 for PLI and £127 on PIN.
Another British player, Moet Martha Franchise, has increased his PLI and PIN by £1 to £118 but has been overtaken since February. His full brother, Moet Martha Felton, currently fifteenth is also strong on production with +1173 kg for milk, indicating that production is a genuine feature in this family, according to Matthew Winter, breeding analyst for Holstein UK and Ireland.
After three years in the UK, German bred Cleiber has now entered the top ten with a PLI of £120. Always high in German rankings, the fact that his oldest UK daughters are now in their second lactations consolidates his position, according to David Turner of Topline Sires. *
Out of the milking parlour and into the beauty parlour for daughters of British-bred Genus bulls at its progeny showcase. Last weeks event at Reaseheath College, Cheshire, attracted 800 producers keen to see Moet Martha Franchise and Painley Knighthood daughters. Both bulls are in the May UK proven bull top 10.
