Brussels condemns poultry welfare
POOR health and welfare conditions for intensively reared chickens have been condemned by European Union scientists in Brussels.
The EU scientific committee on animal health is now demanding a complete overhaul of chicken production methods.
They say the search for ever quicker growing birds has led to widespread lameness and heart and skin disorders.
Scientists blame much of the problem on overcrowding of poultry houses and advocate a cut in stocking rates of between 10 and 20%.
The British poultry industry warns this could put many farms out of business, reportsThe Guardian.
