Brynhyfryd Holstein herd livens up trade
CALVED heifers from Graham and Hilary Daviess Bryhyfryd Holstein herd sparked the liveliest trade from the 200 head of cattle offered at the familys farm at Hebron, Whitland, Carmarthen-shire and achieved the days highest average of £1177.
But it was the nine-month-old calf Brynhyfryd Storm Christiane 2nd, an ET daughter of Maughlin Storm, that drew the days top call of 4200gns.
She is out of the Canadian brood cow Gillette Blackstar Christiane which gave 15,026kg in 305 days followed by 34,200kg in 1011 days. She was bought by Gerard Davies on behalf of a client.
Simon Davies, who will take over the herd after the retirement of his parents after 30 years of breeding Bryhyfryd cattle, retains seedstock of some of the herds most successful families, but there was still much to tempt the ringside.
The Monograms, Pamelas, Primroses, BJ Jeans and Parades are just some of the great cows with progeny in the sale. And it was the fashionably bred calved heifer Brynhyfryd Prelude Pamela 2nd that took bidding to 3700gns before being knocked down to John Harries for his Strumble herd near Fishguard.
She is out of the imported Shoremar L Pamela Very Good-87-2yr Superior Producer that stood first as an in-calf heifer at the 1995 Welsh Dairy Show. Pamela 2nd was offered freshly calved and giving 36kg a day. She was recently classified VG-87 (PIN +£83).
The keenest bidding for cows came for the second calver Brynhyfryd Tab Jean 5th (VG-88). She gave over 9000kg in her heifer lactation and was sold freshly calved. Buyer at 2000gns was Mrs D W C Beer for her Coldridge herd in Devon.
Averages 45 cows £827, 18 calved heifers £1177, 60 served heifers £636, 25 maiden heifers £831 and four bulls £624. (Norton and Brooksbank with J J Morris) *
