BSE experts ‘embroidered’ answers to
ministers to avoid soundbites
BSE experts deliberately “embroidered” advice to Government so they could not be forced into giving press release-style replies, the inquiry into the disease heard yesterday.
Members of the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC), said they avoided giving “soundbite” answers on questions such as “is beef safe to eat?” and “what is the cause of BSE?” so ministers could not quote them in the press.
